
Builder Gel Application Guide for Nail Technicians
Builder gel, often referred to as BIAB (Builder In A Bottle) or soft gel overlay, has revolutionized the nail industry. It offers the strength of acrylic with the flexibility of gel.
However, many nail technicians struggle with premature lifting or popping off. Achieving 4+ weeks of retention requires precise chemical knowledge and mechanical technique.
This guide covers the essential protocols for flawless builder gel application in a professional salon setting.
Why Builder Gel Lifts (And How to Fix It)
Lifting is the number one complaint in nail salons regarding gel services. While clients often blame the product, the issue usually stems from the preparation phase.
Builder gel requires a perfectly clean, dry, and rough surface to adhere correctly. If there is oil, moisture, or dead tissue on the nail plate, the product will lift.
The Importance of Dry Cuticle Prep
Water is the enemy of long-lasting gel manicures. Soaking the nails expands the nail plate. When it shrinks back after drying, the cured gel does not shrink with it, causing separation.
Best Practice: Perform a completely dry manicure. Use an e-file with a fine diamond bit to gently lift the proximal nail fold and exfoliate the cuticle from the nail plate.
- Use a flame bit or safety bit at low RPM (5,000–8,000) to clear the lateral folds.
- Ensure the “true cuticle” (the white, flaky skin on the nail plate) is 100% removed.
- Dust thoroughly with a stiff manicure brush.
Dehydration and Priming Standards
Once the biological prep is done, chemical prep is next. You must alter the pH of the natural nail to maximize adhesion.
Start by cleansing the nail plate with pure acetone or 99% Isopropyl Alcohol. This removes dust and surface oils.
Apply a dehydrator to strip moisture from the layers of the nail plate. Follow immediately with a primer. For clients with lifting issues, use a non-acid primer that acts as double-sided tape for the gel.
Structuring the Perfect Apex with Builder in a Bottle
Builder gel is structural. Unlike regular gel polish, it is meant to provide architecture to the natural nail. Flat application leads to breaks at the stress area.
You must build an apex (the highest point of the nail) to absorb shock and prevent breakage.
The Slip Layer Technique
Builder gel is viscous and does not move like water. To help it flow, you need a “slip layer.”
Apply a thin, uncured layer of the builder gel over the entire nail plate. Do not cure this layer. This wet surface acts as a guide for your larger bead of gel.
If you touch the skin with this slip layer, your structure bead will also flood the cuticle. Keep a hair-thin margin around the cuticle area and sidewalls clear.
Self-Leveling and Gravity Management
Pick up a medium-sized bead of builder gel. Place it near the cuticle area (without touching skin) and gently float it down the center of the nail.
Use a liner brush to guide the product to the sidewalls. Do not press hard; let the gel float.
Pro Tip: Turn the client’s hand upside down for 5 to 10 seconds. Gravity will pull the thickest part of the gel to the center, creating a natural apex and perfect “line of light.”
Curing Protocols for Soft Gels
Proper polymerization is critical for safety and longevity. Under-cured gel can cause contact dermatitis and service breakdown.
Ensure your LED or UV lamp is compatible with your specific brand of builder gel. Not all lamps cure all gels efficiently.
Avoiding Heat Spikes
Builder gel contains more photo-initiators than standard gel polish, which generates an exothermic reaction (heat) when curing.
To protect your client’s nail bed from heat spikes:
- Use the “Low Heat Mode” (often the 99-second button) on your lamp if available.
- Apply thinner layers if the client has sensitive or damaged nail beds.
- Instruct the client to remove their hand immediately if they feel heat, then re-insert once it subsides.
Final Filing and Top Coat
While builder gel is self-leveling, some refinement is often necessary to achieve a crisp, professional shape.
Wipe off the inhibition layer (sticky layer) with alcohol before filing. Use a 180-grit hand file to crisp up the free edge and sidewalls.
If you need to debulk the surface, use a sanding band or hand file to smooth out any imperfections. Buff the surface to ensure the top coat applies smoothly without pitting.
Finish with a high-gloss, stain-resistant top coat. Seal the free edge to prevent water absorption and ensure the manicure lasts until the next fill.
