
Mastering Retention: Why Gel Polish Lifts and How to Prevent It
For any professional nail technician, client retention relies heavily on product retention. Nothing frustrates a client more than a manicure that peels or lifts within a few days.
Lifting is rarely a fault of the product brand itself. In the vast majority of cases, it stems from improper application techniques or insufficient natural nail preparation.
By refining your workflow and adhering to strict industry standards, you can eliminate service breakdown. Here are the top reasons why gel polish lifts and the professional solutions to fix them.
1. Insufficient Natural Nail Preparation
The number one cause of gel polish lifting is the presence of non-living tissue or oils on the nail plate. If the product bonds to the cuticle or pterygium instead of the nail keratin, it will separate.
The Fix: meticulous cleaning. Simply pushing back the eponychium is not enough. You must remove the invisible layer of dead skin (cuticle) from the nail plate.
Many nail technicians use an e-file with a fine diamond bit to gently exfoliate the cuticle area. This creates a clean canvas for adhesion.
Dehydration and pH Balancing
After mechanical preparation, chemical preparation is equally vital. The nail plate must be free of moisture and oil.
- Use a lint-free wipe saturated with 99% Isopropyl Alcohol or a designated cleanser to scrub the nail plate.
- Apply a pH bond or dehydrator to remove surface moisture.
- Apply a primer suited for your specific gel system (acid-free is standard for gel polish) to act as double-sided sticky tape.
2. Flooding the Cuticle and Sidewalls
Precision is the hallmark of a skilled nail technician. If wet gel polish touches the proximal nail fold or runs into the sidewalls, lifting is inevitable.
Once the product cures on the skin, it creates a ledge. As the skin moves and sheds oils, the seal breaks, allowing water and bacteria to penetrate underneath the enhancement.
The Fix: Leave a margin. Aim to apply your base coat and color approximately 1 millimeter away from the skin. Use a liner brush (detailer brush) to push the product closer without touching.
If you do accidentally touch the skin, remove the uncured gel immediately with a clean brush dipped in alcohol before placing the hand in the lamp.
3. Applying Layers Too Thickly
Gel polish is designed to be applied in thin, even layers. Thick coats prevent the UV or LED light from penetrating all the way through to the bottom of the layer.
This results in “under-curing.” The surface may feel hard, but the gel underneath remains soft or liquid. This causes wrinkling, shrinking, and eventual peeling.
The Fix: Wipe the brush. Always wipe one side of the brush completely on the bottle neck. Use the minimal amount of product necessary for coverage.
It is better to apply three thin coats that cure perfectly than two thick coats that compromise the structural integrity of the manicure.
4. Improper Curing Equipment or Technique
Not all curing lamps are created equal. A common industry misconception is that any lamp will cure any gel. This is false and a major safety hazard.
Each gel system is formulated to cure at a specific wavelength and intensity. If your lamp does not match your gel brand’s requirements, the polymerization process will be incomplete.
Hand Placement
Even with the best lamp, poor hand placement causes lifting. If the client’s thumbs are tilted downwards or fingers are bunched together, “blind spots” occur.
- Instruct clients to place their hand flat on the guide plate.
- Cure thumbs separately if your lamp does not have strategically placed diodes for the thumb angle.
- Check your lamp bulbs regularly and replace units that have lost power, even if they still light up.
5. Failure to Cap the Free Edge
Daily wear and tear happens mostly at the tips of the nails. Typing, cleaning, and general use wear down the free edge.
If the free edge is not sealed (capped), the gel creates a blunt edge that can easily catch and pull away from the natural nail.
The Fix: Seal every layer. Lightly run the brush along the free edge of the nail during the base coat, color, and top coat application.
This wraps the product around the keratin layers, creating a seal that prevents water absorption and shrinkage pullback at the tip.
