
Mastering Gel Retention: 5 Pro Techniques to Stop Lifting
Service breakdown is one of the most frustrating challenges in a nail salon. When a client returns with lifted gel polish after only a few days, it impacts your reputation and your bottom line.
Lifting rarely happens due to “bad product.” In 90% of cases, it is a result of improper preparation or application errors during the service.
By refining your workflow and adhering to strict industry standards, you can guarantee sets that last 3 to 4 weeks. Here are the essential steps to eliminate lifting.
1. Complete Removal of Pterygium
Many nail technicians confuse the eponychium (living skin) with the cuticle (dead tissue). Simply pushing back the skin is not enough for long-term adhesion.
You must remove the pterygium, which is the thin, often invisible layer of dead skin attached to the nail plate. If product sits on top of this skin, it will lift as the skin sheds.
Use a high-quality stainless steel pusher or a diamond cuticle bit with your e-file to gently exfoliate the nail plate near the proximal fold and lateral sidewalls.
2. Proper Mechanical Preparation
Gel products need a textured surface to anchor effectively. A perfectly smooth, shiny nail plate does not offer enough grip for the base coat.
Gently remove the surface shine using a 180-grit sponge buffer or a fine sanding band on low RPM. The goal is to create texture, not to thin the nail plate.
Warning: Over-filing damages the dorsal layer of the natural nail. A thinned nail is flexible, and excessive bending will cause the rigid gel product to separate and lift.
3. Chemical Dehydration and pH Balancing
Oil and moisture are the primary enemies of adhesion. Even if the nail looks dry, natural oils can resurface quickly after buffing.
Cleanse the nail plate thoroughly with 99% Isopropyl Alcohol or a specialized cleanser. Use a lint-free wipe and scrub well to remove dust and contaminants.
Apply a dehydrator to strip surface moisture, followed immediately by a primer. For most clients, a non-acid primer is sufficient to act as “double-sided tape” for the gel.
4. The “Scrubbing” Base Coat Technique
How you apply the base coat matters just as much as the product you use. Floating the base coat on like a color polish often leads to pockets of air.
Instead, use a “scrubbing” motion. Press the brush flat and work the gel into the keratin layers of the natural nail plate.
This technique forces the product into the micro-texture you created during prep, establishing a deep physical bond that resists lifting.
5. Capping the Free Edge Correctly
Shrinkage occurs naturally during the polymerization (curing) process. If the free edge is not sealed, the gel pulls back, exposing the natural nail to water and trauma.
Cap the free edge with every layer: base coat, color, and top coat. Ensure you are wrapping the product around the edge, not just painting the tip.
However, avoid a bulky cap. A thick ridge at the tip is prone to chipping, which eventually leads to separation at the free edge.
Check Your Curing Equipment
Even with perfect prep, under-cured gel will eventually lift. It also poses a significant risk of contact dermatitis for your clients.
Ensure your LED or UV lamp is compatible with your chosen gel system. Nanometer range and wattage must match the manufacturer’s requirements.
- Check that all bulbs are functioning and clean of cured gel residue.
- Ensure the client’s hand placement is correct so light reaches the thumbs and sidewalls.
- Replace units or bulbs according to the manufacturer’s lifespan recommendations.
Implementing these standards in your daily salon operations will drastically reduce service breakdowns. Consistent prep leads to consistent retention.
