
Preventing Gel Polish Lifting: The Professional Protocol
For any professional nail technician, client retention is directly linked to product retention. Nothing damages a salon’s reputation faster than a gel manicure that peels or lifts within a few days.
Lifting is rarely a product fault; it is almost exclusively a result of improper preparation or application technique. Mastering adhesion requires understanding the chemistry and mechanics of the natural nail plate.
This guide covers the industry standards for preventing service breakdown, ensuring your clients return with their enhancements intact.
The Foundation: Precision Cuticle Preparation
The leading cause of lifting at the eponychium (cuticle area) is the presence of non-living tissue on the nail plate. Even invisible debris can create a barrier between the keratin and the product.
Removing True Cuticle and Pterygium
Many technicians confuse the eponychium (living skin) with the cuticle (dead tissue). The cuticle is the layer of non-living tissue that sheds from the underside of the eponychium and rides the nail plate as it grows.
Steps for effective removal:
- Soften the dead tissue using a professional cuticle remover or e-file bits designed for natural nail prep.
- Gently push back the eponychium to expose the proximal nail fold.
- Use a curette or a diamond cuticle bit (flame or ball) at low RPM to exfoliate the pterygium from the nail plate.
- Ensure the lateral folds and sinuses are completely free of debris.
If any dead skin remains, the gel will bond to the skin instead of the nail. As the skin produces oils and sheds, the product will detach, creating a pocket for lifting.
Surface Preparation and Dehydration
Once the tissue is removed, the nail plate must be textured and chemically prepared to accept the gel product. The goal is to remove surface oils and contaminants without thinning the natural nail.
Mechanical Etching
Gel products require a textured surface to create a mechanical bond. Use a 180-grit sponge buffer or a specialized sanding band to gently remove the surface shine.
Avoid over-filing. You only need to raise the keratin scales slightly to allow the base coat to anchor into the nail plate structures.
Chemical Cleansing
Dust and oil are the enemies of adhesion. Before applying any product, the nail plate must be thoroughly cleansed.
- Cleanser: Use a pure alcohol or acetone-based cleanser. Avoid products with added scents or oils.
- Dehydrator: Apply a pH-balancing dehydrator to strip moisture from the layers of the nail plate.
- Scrubbing Method: Use a lint-free wipe and vigorously scrub the nail, paying attention to the sidewalls and cuticle area.
Primer Application Standards
Primers act as double-sided sticky tape, bonding the natural keratin to the synthetic gel. However, incorrect usage can lead to service breakdown.
Acid-Free Primer: Most modern gel systems use acid-free primer. Apply it sparingly. Flooding the cuticle with primer can actually cause lifting by over-saturating the nail plate.
Wait Time: Allow the primer to air dry for nearly 60 seconds (or until it creates a tacky or chalky finish) before applying the base coat.
Base Coat Application Techniques
The application of the base coat is the most critical step in the gel polish workflow. Thick application creates heat spikes and improper curing, while thin application may not provide enough structure.
The Scrubbing Technique
Do not simply paint the base coat on like traditional lacquer. Instead, use a “scrubbing” motion with your brush to work the product into the etched keratin layers.
Key application rules:
- Keep a 1mm margin of safety away from the eponychium and sidewalls to prevent skin contact.
- If product touches the skin, clean it immediately with a brush dipped in alcohol before curing.
- Cured product on the skin will lift immediately as the skin moves, pulling the gel away from the nail plate.
Curing and Lamp Compatibility
Under-curing is a silent killer of gel manicures. If the photo-initiators in the gel do not receive the correct wavelength and intensity of UV/LED light, the product remains soft near the nail plate.
Ensuring a Full Cure
Always use a professional-grade lamp that matches your gel system. A generic lamp may not emit the specific nanometer range required by your brand’s chemistry.
- Hand Placement: Educate clients on proper hand placement. The fingers must be flat and centered under the diodes.
- Thumb Curing: Cure thumbs separately if necessary to ensure the light hits the entire surface, including the sides.
- Bulb Maintenance: Check your unit regularly. Weak lights lead to under-curing, which causes lifting and can trigger contact dermatitis allergies.
Capping the Free Edge
Free edge separation occurs when the nail plate shrinks or expands differently than the gel product, often due to water absorption.
To prevent chipping at the tips, you must cap (seal) the free edge with every layer: base, color, and top coat. This wraps the product around the distal edge of the nail, creating a seal against water and physical trauma.
