For any professional nail technician, nothing is more frustrating than a client returning after three days with peeling gel polish.

Service breakdown not only costs your nail salon money in free repairs but also damages your professional reputation.

Lifting is rarely caused by a “bad batch” of product; it is almost always a result of improper application or preparation.

1. Improper Removal of the Pterygium

The number one cause of gel polish lifting happens before you even open the bottle.

Pushing back the eponychium (proximal nail fold) is not enough. You must remove the invisible layer of non-living tissue known as the pterygium.

If gel product adheres to this skin cells on the nail plate rather than the keratin of the natural nail, it will lift as the skin sheds.

Best Practices for Cuticle Prep

  • Use a quality cuticle softener: Allow it to work for the manufacturer’s recommended time to soften non-living tissue.
  • E-file preparation: If certified, use a fine diamond bit at a low RPM to safely exfoliate the cuticle area.
  • Manual tools: Ensure your metal pusher is sharp and clean to scrape the plate effectively without damaging the matrix.

2. Inadequate Dehydration and Priming

The natural nail plate contains oils and moisture that act as a barrier to adhesion.

Simply wiping the nail with alcohol is often insufficient for clients with “oily” nail plates or those prone to lifting.

You must alter the pH of the nail plate temporarily to create a surface that bonds chemically with the base coat.

The Two-Step Chemical Prep

  • Dehydrator: Apply this first to strip moisture and oils from the nail plate. The nail should turn chalky white immediately.
  • Primer (Bonder): Use an acid-free primer sparingly. It acts as double-sided tape between the keratin and the gel product.
  • Avoid skin contact: Flooding the cuticles with primer can cause chemical burns and actually lead to lifting later.

3. Flooding the Sidewalls and Cuticle Area

Precision application is what separates a DIY manicure from a professional salon service.

If your base coat or color coat touches the skin, the product will harden against the soft tissue.

As the skin moves naturally or the nail grows out, this bridge of product will be forced up, creating a pocket for water and bacteria.

Application Control Tips

  • Leave a margin: Leave a hairline gap between the product and the proximal nail fold. It looks cleaner and prevents lifting.
  • Dry brush technique: If you accidentally touch the skin, remove the uncured product completely with a clean up brush dipped in alcohol before curing.
  • Thin layers: Thick layers run into the sidewalls before you can get the hand into the lamp. Apply thin, controlled coats.

4. Improper Curing and Lamp Maintenance

Under-cured gel is a safety hazard that leads to contact dermatitis and service breakdown.

Just because the nail feels hard to the touch does not mean the chemical polymerization process is complete throughout the layers.

Your curing lamp is the most critical tool at your station, yet it is often overlooked during troubleshooting.

Checking Your Light Unit

  • Wavelength compatibility: Ensure your lamp’s output (UV or LED) matches the photo-initiators in your specific gel system.
  • Bulb strength: Old bulbs lose intensity. If you are using a hybrid lamp, check that all diodes are functioning.
  • Hand placement: Educate clients on how to place their hand flat. Thumbs should often be cured separately to ensure direct light exposure.

5. Failing to Cap the Free Edge

Shrinkage is a natural property of gel polish as it cures under the light.

If you do not seal the free edge (the tip of the nail), the product will shrink back, exposing the natural nail.

This exposure leads to separation at the tip, commonly known as tip wear or chipping.

Make it a standard operating procedure to cap the free edge with your base coat, color coats, and top coat.

This “wrapping” technique seals the nail plate completely, protecting it from water absorption and mechanical stress.

By mastering these five areas, you can guarantee a 14+ day wear time, increase your prices, and build a loyal clientele.
