For any professional nail technician, client retention relies heavily on the longevity of the manicure. Nothing destroys client trust faster than gel polish that peels or lifts within days.

Lifting is rarely a product failure; it is almost exclusively a preparation failure. Mastering “dry prep” and understanding the chemistry of adhesion are essential skills for a profitable nail salon.

This guide outlines the industry-standard best practices for natural nail preparation to ensure maximum product adhesion for gel and builder gel services.

Why “Dry Prep” is Non-Negotiable

In the past, traditional manicures involved soaking the hands in water. In a modern gel salon, water is the enemy of adhesion.

Nail plates are porous and act like a sponge. When soaked, they expand and change shape. If you apply gel to a water-logged nail, the product will bond to that expanded shape.

As the nail dries and shrinks back to its natural structure, the rigid gel coating separates from the nail plate, causing immediate lifting. Always perform a dry manicure before any enhancement service.

Cuticle Work: The Foundation of Retention

The most common cause of lifting at the eponychium (cuticle area) is non-living tissue left on the nail plate. Even invisible cuticle skins prevent the gel from bonding to the keratin.

Using the Right Tools

  • Pushers: Use a high-quality stainless steel pusher to gently lift the proximal nail fold and expose the cuticle on the plate.
  • E-Files: For trained technicians, using a fine diamond bit (flame or cylinder) at low RPM allows for precise removal of the cuticle from the nail plate.
  • Nippers: Only remove loose tags of dead skin. Cutting live tissue can cause inflammation and weeping, which compromises product adhesion.

Surface Preparation and Dehydration

Once the cuticle work is complete, the surface of the nail plate must be textured to allow the base coat to anchor physically.

Using a buffer that is too smooth can polish the nail, closing the keratin layers. Conversely, using a grit that is too coarse damages the natural nail.

Best Practices for Surface Buffing

Use a 180 to 240-grit buffer or file. The goal is to remove the natural shine and surface oils, not to thin the nail plate.

If the gel touches the skin, it will lift. Leave a microscopic margin between the product and the skin. Use a detailer brush to clean up any flooding before curing.

The Free Edge

Failure to “cap” or seal the free edge leads to chipping and separation at the tip. Run the brush along the distal edge of the nail to wrap the product around the tip.

The Sidewalls

Ensure the product does not run into the lateral folds. If the client has deep sidewalls, use your fingers to pull the skin back during application to ensure a clean line.
