Lifting not only damages your reputation but also costs you valuable time in free repairs. Understanding the science behind adhesion is critical for a successful nail business.

1. Incomplete Cuticle Preparation

The most common cause of lifting occurs before you even open a bottle of gel. If non-living tissue remains on the nail plate, the product will bond to the skin, not the nail.

When the skin naturally sheds or produces oil, the gel sitting on top of it will separate, creating a pocket for water and bacteria to enter.

The Fix: Thorough Tissue Removal

  • Push Back: Use a sanitized metal pusher or orange wood stick to gently release the proximal nail fold.
  • Exfoliate: Ensure all pterygium (the thin, sticky membrane) is completely removed from the nail plate.

  • Hardware Lifespan: If you use a CFL UV lamp, change bulbs every 4-6 months. For LED units, monitor for diode failure and replace the unit as recommended by the manufacturer.

5. Failing to Cap the Free Edge

Shrinkage occurs naturally as gel polymerizes. If the free edge is not sealed, the gel may pull back, exposing the natural nail tip.

This exposure allows water to seep between the natural nail and the product during hand washing, leading to separation at the distal edge.

The Fix: The Wrap Technique

Run the brush containing a small amount of product along the free edge of the nail for the base coat, color, and top coat. This “caps” the keratin layers and seals the manicure.
