For professional nail technicians, the electric file (e-file) is an extension of the hand. It reduces service time and saves physical strain on your wrists and shoulders.

However, improper use can lead to severe nail plate damage, heat spikes, and uncomfortable client experiences. Mastering this tool is non-negotiable for a successful salon career.

This guide covers essential safety protocols, bit selection, and handling techniques designed specifically for salon workflows.

Understanding Torque vs. Speed

Many nail technicians mistakenly believe that high speed is the key to efficiency. In reality, torque is the most critical factor in your e-file machine.

Torque refers to the power of the machine to keep the bit rotating when pressure is applied. A machine with low torque will stall or stutter when touching the product.

When a machine lacks torque, techs often compensate by increasing speed or pressure, which causes heat and potential damage. High-quality salon e-files provide consistent power at lower RPMs.

Selecting the Right Bit for the Service

Using the wrong bit is the leading cause of service breakdown and natural nail damage. Your kit should include specific bits for specific stages of the service.

1. Carbide and Ceramic Bits

These bits are designed for removing bulk product like hard gel, acrylic, or dip powder. They contain flutes that shave off the product rather than grinding it.

Carbide: durable and sharp. Best for debulking acrylics. They come in coarse, medium, and fine grits. Never use these on the natural nail plate.

Ceramic: operates with less heat transfer than carbide. Ideal for removing gel polish over builder gel or for clients sensitive to heat.

2. Diamond Bits

Diamond bits are used for natural nail preparation and cuticle work. They grind away dead skin and create texture on the nail plate for adhesion.

Flame Bit: lifts the proximal nail fold and clears the cuticle from the nail plate. Use a fine grit (red band) to avoid cutting the skin.

Ball Bit: exfoliates dry skin and smooths the cuticle area after trimming. This creates the “Russian Manicure” or high-end aesthetic look.

3. Mandrels and Sanding Bands

The mandrel holds disposable sanding bands. This is the only disposable part of your bit kit and must be changed after every single client.

Use a fine grit (240) sanding band at low speed to gently remove shine from the natural nail before product application.

Use a medium grit (150 or 180) for shortening enhancements or refining the surface of an acrylic extension.

Prevention: Avoiding the “Ring of Fire”

The “Ring of Fire” is a painful groove cut into the nail plate, usually caused by improper angle or excessive pressure near the cuticle area.

To prevent this common injury:

• Check your angle: Keep the bit parallel to the nail. Angling the tip down into the nail plate digs a trench into the natural keratin layers.
• Keep moving: Never hold the e-file in one spot. Continuous motion prevents heat buildup and friction burns.
• Use a fulcrum: Always anchor your pinky finger on the client’s hand or finger to stabilize your working hand. This prevents slipping.

Sanitation and Disinfection Standards

E-file bits are multi-use tools (except sanding bands) and require rigorous infection control between every client.

Adhere to the following workflow to maintain salon safety standards:

• Clean: Remove dust and debris using a wire brush or ultrasonic cleaner with soapy water. Disinfectant cannot work if debris is blocking the surface.
• Disinfect: Immerse bits in a hospital-grade EPA-registered disinfectant for the time specified by the manufacturer (usually 10 minutes).
• Dry and Store: Allow bits to air dry completely before storing them in a covered, dust-free container to prevent rust and cross-contamination.
